LUBUK PAKAM – The Deli Serdang Regency Government has expressed its full support for the upcoming initial water filling (impounding) of the Lau Simeme Dam, scheduled to begin on August 19, 2026. This process marks a vital testing phase to ensure the dam’s structural readiness and operational safety before full deployment.
The commitment was reaffirmed by the Regent of Deli Serdang, Asri Ludin Tambunan, during an audience with representatives from the Sumatra II River Basin Authority (BWS Sumatera II) at the Regent’s Office in Lubuk Pakam on Monday (10/8/2026).
Regent Asri Ludin Tambunan highlighted that the local administration is eager to see the national strategic infrastructure deliver direct socio-economic benefits to the community as soon as possible.
“We fully support this impounding process. Our hope is that within the next year, the dam will start yielding concrete benefits, and its impact will be directly felt by the community. May everything proceed smoothly,” Regent Tambunan stated.
During the coordination meeting, Regent Tambunan instructed the Sub-district Head (Camat) of Sibiru-Biru and related municipal agencies to maintain active public outreach and prepare necessary risk mitigation measures throughout the impounding period.
The Lau Simeme Dam, located in Sibiru-Biru Sub-district, Deli Serdang Regency, is one of the Central Government’s National Strategic Projects (PSN) designed to significantly upgrade water resource management across North Sumatra. Constructed under the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) through BWS Sumatera II, the dam features a storage capacity of tens of millions of cubic meters.
The primary objective of the Lau Simeme Dam is to serve as a major flood mitigation facility for the neighboring capital city of Medan and Deli Serdang Regency. By regulating flow rates along the Percut River and Belumai River basins, the dam is projected to reduce flood discharge risks considerably during peak rainy seasons.
Beyond flood management, the reservoir will serve as a long-term raw water supply source for Medan and Deli Serdang, supporting clean water treatment plants operated by local utility companies. The project also carries potential for micro-hydro renewable power generation and is expected to spur eco-tourism and agricultural development in the surrounding rural areas of Sibiru-Biru.
